Former Coventry City defender Leon Barnett has been forced to retire, after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

Barnett, 32, joined The Sky Blues on loan from West Bromwich Albion in November 2009 after only two league appearances for The Baggies initially until January, which was then extended until the end of the 2009/2010 Season.

In total Barnett made 20 appearances for The Sky Blues, being sent off twice.

Currently at League Two side Northampton Town, Barnett was sent for tests after a reaction in a game against former club Bury where he was advised to stop playing with immediate effect as it would be”unsafe for him to continue training and playing.”

Speaking to the club website, Northampton boss Keith Curle said: “We are all devastated for Leon.

“Leon had been having some issues but after a reaction in the Bury game we knew something wasn’t right, so we sent him for further testing.

“The medical team made the correct decision to stop all activity, and after testing and second and third opinions, for his own health and safety, Leon has been advised to retire.

“It is very sad news. Leon is not just a good player, but an important figure off the pitch too.

“However, far more importantly for Leon and his family, is that this has been diagnosed now and he is fit and well.

“He has enjoyed a fantastic career as a player, playing at all levels of the game to play over 350 senior games across the four divisions.”

After starting his career at Luton Town, Barnett would also represent Aylesbury United, West Bromwich Albion, Coventry City, Norwich City, Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, Bury & Northampton Town, making a total of 363 appearances across all four divisions of English professional football.
