Venue: The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Stadium
Comepetition: Capital One League Cup, 1st Round
Date/Kick Off: Tuesday, August 14th 2012, 7.45pm
The 2012/2013 kicks off on Tuesday night as Coventry City travel to Dagenham & Redbridge in the First Round of the Capital One Cup. Following last year’s First Round defeat to Bury, Andy Thorn will be hoping his side can progress against lower league opposition this time around.
City striker Cody McDonald will be looking to continue his fine pre-season form, hitting four goals in three games, as will Daggers’ striker, Dwight Gayle who has also netted four times in pre-season.
Dagenham & Redbridge manager John Still will be without midfielder Kevin Maher who has been forced to undergo another operation to insert a different screw into the pin in his foot, in a bid to try and resolve the metatarsal problem which ruled him out for the majority of the 2011/2012 season.
Other than Maher, The Daggers have a fully fit squad as they look to win their first ever League Cup tie at their sixth attempt and it is likely new signing Dwight Gayle, who has scored 99 goals in the last seasons in non-league football, will start his first competitive game for The Daggers.
Andy Thorn will be without summer signing Adam Barton after he was called up for international action, despite missing the last six months of last season with a broken leg as he looks to gain match fitness, a decision Thorn is clearly unhappy with; “Some bright spark decided he’s fit for international football when he hasn’t played a game for six months, which is absolutely incredible.”
Fellow summer signing John Fleck will also miss the game after picking up a hamstring complaint in pre-season, and he will not be risked.
Long term absentees Cyrus Christie (knee), Conor Thomas (ankle) and David Bell (hip) will miss the game, and although Nathan Cameron (knee) has returned to training, this game is likely to come too soon for him.
It is understood that no players have played for both Dagenham & Redbridge and Coventry CIty.
