Former Coventry City midfielder, Aron Gunnarsson, has described his delight at preparing for his first season in the Premier League with Cardiff City.
Gunnarsson arrived at The Ricoh Arena in June 2008, for an undisclosed fee from Dutch side AZ. He arrived having made more senior international appearances for Iceland than he had professional club appearances for AZ, signing a three-year contract with the Sky Blues.
Gunnarsson started the first game of the 2008/2009 season at home to Norwich City, but didn’t score his first goal for the club until February 2009, when he scored a spectacular volley against Premier League side Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup in a 2-2 draw.
During his three years with City, there was plenty of Premier League interest in his signature, but the midfielder opted to move to fellow Championship side Cardiff City on a free-transfer upon the expiration of his contract, a move which has been validated after they won promotion last season; his second at the club.
Gunnarsson told the Western Mail: “It was a great decision to sign for Cardiff. I have dreamed of playing Premier League football since I was a boy in Iceland and promotion has given me that chance.
“Quite a few Icelandic players have been in the Premier League, Gudjonsson, Hreidarsson and more. They are all good friends of mine and they tell me it’s the best league in the world.
“Next season I will find out for myself. I want to be a part of that.”
Gunnarsson made 133 appearances for the Sky Blues, scoring 7 goals.
