Former Coventry City loanee Patrick van Aanholt has missed out on the chance to represent Holland at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Louis van Gaal, who will take over as Manchester United manager once Holland’s World Cup comes to an end, has decided to drop van Aanholt in favour of Terence Kongolo.
van Aanholt had been widely expected to be named in van Gaal’s final 23 man squad after being named in the provisional 30 man squad as the back up for the left back position.
van Aanholt joined the Sky Blues on loan from Premier League side Chelsea in 2009 and made 20 appearances in The Championship before being recalled. He has since made 8 appearances for Chelsea but has spent the majority of the time since on loan at Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic and most recently the last three seasons at Vitesse.
He has represented Holland at every international age group from Under-16 onwards, earning two full caps for the full national side to date.
